Summer in Alburnium

7/8/2025

From the Summer Solstice through to the beginning of Fall, kingdom towns and cities all across Alburnium come to life.

In Aloblase, life takes on a slower pace since the Academy generally holds very few classes during the warmer months. Most students return to their homes, where they can practice their talents in everyday life and help their families with their businesses. Those returning to the smaller villages and hamlets typically rejoin farming communities. All hands are needed to gather the seasonal produce and distribute the bounty to those in need. Those from larger towns and cities can also put their newly found skills to great use. Many students are hired on as apprentices to continue learning how to use their talents in practical ways.

Everyone, whether they are returning or are permanent residents, has a full season of fun activities to look forward to. Though individual cities and town may hold their special celebrations, there are certain events that everyone participates in all across the land.

During summer, days become longer and the air is filled with the sweet aroma of wildflowers and fresh-cut grasses. The smoke from community fires—where various meats are roasted for celebrations—wafts through the warm air. People tend to move more slowly these months, leisurely strolling around town and often stopping to chat with neighbors and catch up on local gossip. Without the danger of harsh winter winds or sudden spring storms, they eagerly spend time outside, seeking any reason to enjoy the bright sunshine.

Animals and other creatures emerge from their woodland dens. Dwarves, centaurs, satyrs, and similar clans travel between towns, trading goods made during the long winter for fresh produce and herbs. The trees and foliage echo with birds’ songs as they chatter and fill nests with eggs. Otters and beavers repair dams or drift lazily along rivers, passing herons and grazing deer. Green and yellow plants sharply contrast with the powdery blue sky, dotted with large, fluffy white clouds. Bright and diverse colors fill the landscape.

Summer is a season of festivities. It begins with the celebration of the Solstice, when Winter finally releases its grip and Mother Summer takes over. This period is for harvesting the first fruits and vegetables and sharing them at community gatherings. Fish like sunfish, trout, and bass from nearby streams are prepared for dinner. The night features dancing and music, as the solstice is the longest day of the year. Beaded necklaces are given to children; when shaken, they produce loud noises, but everyone happily joins in, celebrating the season of abundance with voices and beads alike.

Around midsummer, people pause their work to honor the sacrifices that freed the land from those seeking harm and destruction. Warriors and Healers are celebrated during this festival for their commitment to maintaining peace and health across the kingdom. It is customary to leave small gifts and trinkets on the porches of local Healers or those who have served or are currently serving in the King's Army.

This season also marks a time of Union Celebrations. During spring and summer, young couples walk through town hand in hand or enjoy picnics by streams or ponds where the coolest breezes are. Soon, a couple will share their plan to unite their lives. This provides the women of the town two weeks to organize the festivities, while the men search for the largest buck to roast for the celebration. All participate in honoring the union.

Unions aren't the only events celebrated during summer. Births, town founding anniversaries, and the passing of loved ones who travel to Everlasting are also commemorated. No matter the event—large or small—communities come together to celebrate, support, or honor their neighbors and friends. Other celebrations may include skills competitions, such as bake-offs or barbecues, to crown the best dish. Humans and creatures might challenge each other to races or precision axe-cutting contests. Summer is a time for gathering, sharing bounty, enjoying companionship, and exchanging stories.
