Book Lovers Make Time For What They Love

Time is precious, isn’t it?
In this hustle and bustle world, our time is limited. We are tired and most often want to check out and relax. Not to mention there is a mile-long list of better things to do besides… reading a book.
As a writer, I struggle with reading just for pleasure.
Why? Because if I’m reading, it’s either my own work while I edit, or doing research, or taking care of admin stuff, like writing this blog.
Are you in the same boat? You have a shelf (or e-reader) full of books you’re dying to read but simply can’t find the time. Well… I have some ideas that might help.

I love, love, love books.

When I walk into a bookstore, I swear I can hear angels singing. OK, not really, but that’s how it feels. I always draw in a deep breath of that new book smell before I begin my explorations. It’s heavenly. If it’s mixed with the scent of coffee and Danishes… even better.
Walking the maze of shelves causes my skin to tingle. So many destinations. All those adventures waiting to happen. My imagination is sparking like a frayed wire.
You’re probably laughing at me about now… unless you’re an avid book lover, then perhaps you totally understand. When I walk through a bookstore, I feel like I’m home. This is where I belong.

What reading has done for me

First and foremost, I learn when I read.
Books help us understand the world around us. We gain insights into different cultures, beliefs, and experiences that create empathy and broaden our outlook on the world around us.

Reading improves my language skills, vocabulary, and writing ability.
It can stimulate our imagination, creativity, and critical thinking skills. Furthermore, it's a great way to reduce stress and promote relaxation. How? By giving us a break from real life.

Reading is a solitary activity and enables us to unwind and think about something besides our own problems. And sometimes, reading helps us to think out of the box which also helps with problem-solving.

Lastly, reading opens doors to endless entertainment and exploration.
From riveting novels to enlightening non-fiction, there's a book out there for everyone, waiting to be discovered. I always tell people that if you’re stuck in a book you don’t like, put it down. There are so many out there waiting for us to find them, the perfect books for our particular taste. Sometimes, the books I’ve set down end up being the perfect read at a later time.

Finding Time To Read

I know that finding time to read can be a big challenge. It is for me, but I miss books when I don’t read, just like I miss stories when I’m not writing. It’s weird, I know, but true. So, here are some simple ways to make time for reading daily:
  1. Audio books can be gold when you're in a time crunch. Whether you're commuting or using your hands to work on a project, use this time to listen to audio books. This hands-free option allows you to enjoy books while performing other tasks.
  2. Break time with a book: Use lunch breaks or short breaks during the day to read a few pages. Even a few minutes spent reading can make a difference. eBooks can be read on a tablet, phone, or other small digital device that can slip into your purse or pocket.
  3. Snuggle up in your PJs and favorite blanket for  some bedtime reading: Make reading part of your nightly routine. This can help you relax and also improve your sleep.
  4. Replace social media scrolling with reading: Instead of endlessly scrolling through social media during your free time, pick up a book. Am I stepping on anyone’s toes? Oh wait, those are MY toes!
  5. Join a book club: This can give you a set deadline to finish a book and also provide a social aspect to reading. Libraries usually offer book clubs, and I’ve even seen some online. They can be fun and a great way place to talk about books you enjoy.

Remember, the goal is not to finish as many books as possible, but to enjoy the journey of reading. So find a routine that works for you.

I hope this helps. I’m including a downloadable reading tracker that you can print up and use. It’s two pages, but you can print on both sides and slip it into your planner, or the book you’re currently reading.

To get your copy, either download the pdf file, or click and save the pictures below. Enjoy!

Do you have any other tips for finding time to read, please share them in the comments. And let me know if you benefited from this post. It helps me to know what you enjoy reading about here at Castle’s Story World.
Blessings!
