Sample Scene From Chapter Seven“I love you to the moon and back,” Heath had whispered in her ear. The same thing he’d been saying to her for as long as she could remember. “And I’ll love you for all eternity.” Faye swallowed, wishing the burning in her chest and throat would go away before Chase got in the driver’s seat. He was starting to head this way, his ambling gait reminding her of how a bear might walk. He was a bear of a man. Intense, contemplative, and purposeful. His hands were calloused, yet strong when they’d stopped her from falling. His voice was rough like sand rubbed over the skin, yet soothing to listen to when he let his guard down and spoke his heart. He didn’t mind showing Heath his love at all. Didn’t mind the sappy kisses to his cheeks. Nor the hearty hugs when Heath’s thin, trembling arms seemed to hold on for dear life. Chase was always kind, patient, and devoted to Heath. He deserved those loving expressions. The seat of the truck gave way when the big man climbed in and started the engine. “I love this time of year,” Chase said, breaking the quiet. Strange, he was seldom the first to speak and usually seemed to enjoy the silence. “I like being reminded that we’re always able to start over again. New growth. New life. New… hope. In a way, spring reminds me of God’s mercy. What’s that scripture? It’s new every morning?” Faye thought about it, trying to remember where she’d heard that phrase before. Chase snapped his finger, his grin puffing out his beard. “Lamentations. That’s it. Through the Lord’s mercies we are not consumed,” he quoted as if reading it word for word. How did he do that? Daddy James used to be able to pop off scriptures. The ability always amazed Faye. “Because His compassions don’t fail. They are new every morning. For…?” His nose wrinkled as he mentally seemed to be searching for the rest. “For great is your faithfulness.” Faye finished, remembering at least that part. His faithfulness and mercy. Momma would quote that when someone messed up. Tomorrow is a new day. His mercies are new every morning. Forgive and forget, Sweetpea. “Right.” Chase nodded. His voice rose with conviction as he finished, “The Lord is my portion, says my soul, therefore I will hope in Him. That’s it. Chapter three, somewhere around the middle.” He chuckled. “I always have trouble remembering the exact numbers, but I can recall the words pretty well. They said I had a photographic memory.” He shrugged. “But I only remember what’s really important.” Faye let Chase’s words tumble around in her heart until the pounding became nearly unbearable. Forgive and forget, Sweetpea…show the mercy that’s been shown you. Could she? His mercies are new every morning… Had He forgiven? Heath said his eternity was between him and God and nobody else. Jeanie’s words hit her again, hard like a brick smashed against the side of her head: You’ve been blessed with two dads who have loved you. Don’t miss this opportunity…. Her best friend had never known the love of one earthly father, but she’d learned how to accept the love from a Heavenly One. You’ve been blessed with two… I’ll love you for all eternity… her dad had whispered when she had quickly bent closer to grant his requested hug. Great, her throat was burning again.
